Bombshell Jennifer Lawrence channels minimalism

Lawrence in a simple shift dress

Even though 20-year-old Jennifer Lawrence just came on the scene with her Academy-nominated role in Winter’s Bone, it seems like she has it all: beauty, talent, potential and especially a great sense of style. There is no shortage of beautiful women in Hollywood, but Jennifer espouses the traditional all-American look with blonde hair, doe eyes and a voluptuous body.

Fashionistas have spent a great deal of time marveling at Jennifer’s dress choices for recent award shows. My favorite so far is the red body-con Calvin Klein she wore to the Oscars. Who would have thought such a simple dress could give a girl such a stunning glow.

This leads me to believe that minimalism Continue reading

Great style at Vanity Fair Oscars after party

At the Oscars, all of the attention was focused on what celebrities were wearing on the red carpet. This year’s red carpet was truly a display of many sophisticated artworks of high fashion and couture. However, if a celebrity didn’t attend the Oscars, it doesn’t mean that she lost the chance to doll up. The Vanity Fair Oscars after party gathered the rest of prominent singers, actresses and trend-setters. Here are some highlights.
Amanda Seyfried, Cameron Diaz and Taylor Swift all opted for mini-dresses with varying levels of coverage.

53rd Grammys: A night to talk about

Drake, Diana Argon, Natasha Beddingfield, Nicole Kidman & Selena Gomez on the red carpet

The Grammys is an occasion not only for honoring artists but also for extravagant performances and overt fashion statements. The weather of California provided the perfect opportunity for female artists to show off skin in their skimpy frocks. The 53rd award show this past Sunday kept the audience on edge by focusing more on performances than handing out gramophones. Some surprise wins and stage stunts added the necessary oomph to the presentation.

Canadian alternative rock band Arcade Fire pulled the biggest underdog win of the night. They beat out Eminem, Lady Antebellum, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry to win Album of the Year for “The Suburbs.” Esperanza Spalding, a commercially lesser known jazz vocalist, left Justin Bieber fans rather disappointed when she claimed Best New Artist.

Country sensation Lady Antebellum captured five trophies, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Need You Now.” David Letterman utilized the often-confused-categories to deliver a humorous touch. Continue reading

2011 Golden Globe: let the fashion roll

Some very good wardrobe choices were made at the Golden Globe this year, where sparkle nude gowns were a rave. Here is a summary of the trends:

1. Classy long-sleeve gowns:

Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway and Leighton Meester all looked understated but stunning in these classy gowns. I think Leighton’s dress was a little too conservative with the boxy sleeves, but the sexy slit on the skirt balances it out.

2. Sophisticated A-line gowns:

A-line dresses were popular because the shape fits most body type. Here, Sarah Hyland (Modern Family), Kaley Cuoco, Jenna Ushkowitz (Glee), Dianna Argon (Glee) and Carrie Underwood showcase their princess flocks. Carrie was absolutely gorgeous but on the safe side. Sarah’s dress was most interesting with the sweet-heart neckline and laced bodice (I’m loving Max Azria more and more!).

3. Grecian-inspired gowns with flutter sleeves: Continue reading

The 82nd Academy Award

The dresses at this year Oscar fall neatly into a few color schemes including nudes, pastels, metallics, black, blue and red. One-shoulder straps and cascading ruffles are also popular.

1. Nudes:

I didn’t even know who this girl was but her dress is one of my favorites. Anika Noni Rose (Dream girls, The princess and the frog)

Anna Kendrick, very subtle and elegant.

Demi Moore. Yes, her skin does match her dress … Talking about the Snooki trend.

Diane Kruger. Do the black embellishments of this dress remind anyone of drag queen costumes?

Miley Cyrus appeared very hunchbacked in her dress, afraid it might fall off? I hate her biker’s blown hair.

Sarah Jessica Parker. A very bad choice, from the shiny fabric to the unflattering inverted-triangle silhouette. It seems like she’s being stabbed by the spear-like top and then strangled by the scarf.

Zoe Saldana. There’re a lot of ambivalent feelings about this dress. The bodice is fine, a little too sparkly but the skirt acutely resembles a Swifter duster.

2. Rosy/lavender:

Queen Latifah. A big woman who does it right. The dress is perfect for her.

Jennifer Lopez. This Armani Prive number only enhances her already amazing curves. The dress is off the runway, impressive and exaggerated but not too much. She totally pulls it off.

Charlize Theron. You know, those controversial rosettes. Still, the dress looks very nice on her slender frame.

 3. Metallics:

Kate Winslet. She keeps it simple and elegant.

Sandra Bullock. The embellishment is sophisticated, and the hair and makeup is so classy. She looks perfect receiving her Actress in a Leading Role award.

Is Helen Mirren 64? Her dress is very age-appropriate, especially with the opaque sleeves.
